Dodgers pick up right-hander Juan Nicasio from Colorado Rockies

If little things add up to big ones, maybe the Dodgers are building up to something.

Monday they added another pitcher for cash considerations or a player to be named later, so new President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman is quietly finding minor ways to spend his newfound ownership wealth.

This time he acquired right-hander Juan Nicasio from the Rockies, presumably to pitch out of the new bullpen.

To make room for Nicasio on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers actually designated for assignment the first player Friedman acquired with the Dodgers, infielder Ryan Jackson. Talk about a tough trivia question one day.

Nicasio, 28, went 6-6 with a 5.38 ERA in 33 games for the Rockies last season, including 14 starts that all came in the first half. As a starter, he went 5-5 with a 5.95 ERA 1.59 WHIP, but in 19 games as a reliever he went 1-1 with a 3.48 ERA and 1.07 WHIP.

The bullpen was the Dodgers’ greatest weakness last season. Friedman previously added veteran reliever Joel Peralta from his former club, the Tampa Bay Rays.

Nicasio, a four-year veteran from the Dominican Republic, is arbitration-eligible. Lifetime he is 21-22 with a 5.03 ERA.
