A Molotov cocktail was thrown at the Islamic Center of New Mexico in Albuquerque on Friday morning, causing church officials to be on a heightened sense of alert.

The incident occurred after 8:30 a.m., the Albuquerque Journal reported. No one was injured, but the building was damaged.

Albuquerque police could not be immediately reached for additional information.

A Molotov cocktail is a rudimentary explosive device made of a flammable chemical in a bottle with a rag stuffed inside.

The New Mexico Conference of Churches issued a statement Friday, saying church leaders were baffled and appalled.

“Christians across our state reject such hate-based violence,” said the statement. “We recognize our Muslim brothers and sisters as fellow children of God and as our neighbors whom we are called to love.”

Calls to the NMCC for additional comment were not returned.
