Developing: Shooting at historic black church in S.C.: Police searching for gunman

Share

More than three hours after a shooting at a church in Charleston, S.C., police were looking for the gunman, and they had not provided information about any victims.

Charleston police said they were searching for a white man, about 21 years old, with a slender build. He was clean-shaven and wearing a gray sweatshirt, blue jeans and boots, they said.

The shooting took place about 9 p.m. Eastern time at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, which says on its website that it has “one of the largest and oldest black congregations south of Baltimore.”

The church’s pastor is the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, who has been a state senator since 2001. He served in the state’s House of Representatives in 1997-2000.
