Tesla software upgrades make Model S smarter

Share

Tesla Motors is offering a series of software upgrades to improve and personalize its Model S electric sport sedan.

With the new software, free to current Tesla owners, the Model S will navigate traffic better, offer commuting route advice, and remind you of appointments when you get into the car.

It will also allow the operator to start the vehicle without a key, using a smartphone, and give the car its own personal nickname. The car will even remember that you have a steep driveway and will make a suspension adjustment so you don’t scrape the underside of car, whatever you choose to call it.

Tesla is operating beta tests of its traffic-based navigation and personal calendar features.

But the remote start and “location-based air suspension” features are ready to go. With the remote start, users must enter a password before starting the car through the Tesla mobile app. With the automatic suspension adjustment, the car will record locations where the user has selected a high “ride height” to clear obstacles on the user’s regular route.

And the nickname? Tesla says you can now make your Model S’ pet name “official.” It will appear on your phone’s mobile app, and in the “About Your Tesla” section on the car’s touchscreen display.
