David Schwimmer joins cast of ‘American Crime Story’

Ryan Murphy’s dramatization of the O.J. Simpson trial just got its Kardashian: David Schwimmer.

Schwimmer has joined the cast of the upcoming FX anthology series “American Crime Story” to play the defense attorney, and close friend of O.J.’s, Robert Kardashian (also the papa of Kim, Khloe, Kourtney and Rob).

The anthology series, patterned after Murphy’s other hit, “American Horror Story,” tackles a single story per season, and the first tale it’s taking on is a doozy: the so-called “Trial of the Century,” the trial of former football great Simpson for the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.

Actually, the subtitle of the series is “The People v. O.J. Simpson” and it’s being directed by Murphy from a script by “Big Eyes” writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski.

Cuba Gooding Jr. has already been cast as Simpson and Sarah Paulson is playing prosecutor Marcia Clark.

But more than any other trial, there are so many well-known roles to cast, from defense attorney Johnny Cochran to Judge Lance Ito to star witness and houseguest Brian “Kato” Kaelin.

This will be the first time Schwimmer has joined the regular cast of a TV series since “Friends” ended in 2004. He’s made guest appearances in many shows, including “Entourage” and “30 Rock,” as well as directed films and TV.

Production on the series will take place early next year in -- where else? -- Los Angeles.
