Oculus VR hires Google X exec Mary Lou Jepsen

Facebook-owned Oculus VR has hired Google X executive Mary Lou Jepsen to join the virtual reality company, an Oculus spokesman confirmed Tuesday.

Jepsen spent the last three years running the Display Division at Google X, a research arm of Google dedicated to making major technological advancements. Previously, she headed a similar division at Intel and led the Nomadic Displays Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she was also a professor.

Oculus VR did not say what role Jepsen will play at Oculus.

Oculus VR started in Irvine, but relocated to Menlo Park in Northern California after Facebook bought the company in 2014 for almost $2 billion. Since the acquisition, the virtual reality headset maker has gone on a hiring spree, bringing on board engineers from Google, as well as game development studios like 343 Industries and Valve.

A consumer version of the Oculus Rift is not yet available, but a developer’s edition has been available for early adopters since late 2012.
