Matt Kemp gives Padres the edge in extra-inning win over Angels, 4-0

KEY MOMENT: With the bases loaded and two out in the 10th inning, Matt Kemp broke a scoreless tie with a three-run double. Kemp had not had an extra-base hit or a run batted in since May 17.

AT THE PLATE: The Angels, with the worst on-base percentage in the American League, were shut out for the fourth time this season. They were shut out three times last season, when they had the best record in the league. The Angels had five hits Tuesday — two by Albert Pujols — and they have scored more than four runs in one of their last eight games.

ON THE MOUND: Joe Smith took the loss by facing six batters in the 10th inning and retiring two. After giving up five runs in 202/3 innings this season, he gave up four runs in two-thirds of an inning Tuesday. He also walked two, after not walking any of his previous 37 batters. Starter Matt Shoemaker delivered his finest performance in a shaky season, working seven shutout innings and scattering four hits, all singles. Shoemaker walked one, struck out six, and lowered his earned-run average from 6.29 to 5.44. He had given up nine home runs — and 18 runs — in his previous four starts, covering 231/3 innings.

EXTRA BASES: Mike Trout ranks second among American League outfielders in the first announcement of voting results for the July 14 All-Star game. Trout, the most valuable player of last year’s All-Star game, trails Lorenzo Cain of the Kansas City Royals. Pujols, who ranks fifth among first basemen, is the only other Angels player among the top five at his position. … The Angels saluted former broadcaster Dick Enberg in a pregame ceremony. Enberg, who calls Padres games now, enters the Hall of Fame in July. The Angels presented him with a pair of founding owner Gene Autry’s cowboy boots. … The Angels recalled utility player Grant Green from triple-A Salt Lake.
