Blaze damages vacant building near downtown L.A.; no injuries reported

Flames tore through a vacant three-story building west of downtown Los Angeles on Sunday night, authorities said.

The fire was first reported around 10:30 p.m. at 1201 Huntley Drive in the Westlake neighborhood, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey. It was initially reported as the 1100 block of West Third Street.

About 90 firefighters battled the “very heavy fire,” which was limited to the top floor of the building and knocked down about 45 minutes later, Humphrey said. The building is located on a hillside, and the lower two floors are partly underground.

The building is currently unoccupied, and there was no immediate threat to those nearby, Humphrey said.

Fire crews planned to stay at the scene overnight, he said, and officials will resume the investigation Monday to try to determine the cause of the blaze.
