‘South Park’ takes on Redskins’ name; runs clip during Washington game
“South Park” is going after the Washington Redskins for the name that offends so many.
The popular cartoon made sure that team and show fans in the D.C. area know what is in store for the 18th season when a clip -- aired reportedly only in the D.C. market, was shown during Sunday’s Washington game against the Philadelphia Eagles -- featuring an animated version of Redskins owner Dan Snyder.
In the clip, Synder fights with Eric Cartman over use of the name “Washington Redskins,” which Cartman is calling his new business because the name is no longer trademarked.
Washington lost the Redskins trademark because of its offensive nature. The show uses that as a springboard to turn the tables on an animated Snyder, who calls Cartman’s use of the name “offensive and derogatory” to the team.
“South Park” is known for its crude comedy, but also for intertwining current social issues into story lines.
The real Snyder has said numerous times that he has no intention of changing the name.
