A transgender woman was fatally shot in the head early Thursday during a robbery “gone bad” in East Hollywood, police said.

The woman, who was not immediately identified, was discovered about 2:30 a.m. by officers responding to a report of shots fired in the 600 block of North Kenmore Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police said witnesses told detectives that she was robbed by two to three men who fled on foot after shots rang out.

“It appears to be a robbery gone bad,” said LAPD Det. Joe Losorelli.

The woman was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly after 5 a.m., police said.

Losorelli said it was too early to determine whether she was targeted and whether any valuables were stolen.

There have been six homicides over the last year within a mile of the Thursday morning’s shooting, according to the L.A. Times’ Homicide Report database. Most recently, Alexander Eduardo Garcia, 38, was fatally shot Sept. 27 in the 4100 block of Rosewood Avenue.
