A second person has died in San Diego County from suspected West Nile virus as the state continues to suffer its worst outbreak of the mosquito-spread brain infection in nearly a decade.

The 71-year-old man in San Diego died Tuesday, according to county health officials.

While the man showed symptoms of West Nile virus, tests were inconclusive, officials said. He was admitted to a hospital with fever, headache and weakness.

A 78-year-old man in La Mesa died from the virus Oct. 10.

Until the La Mesa man’s death, San Diego County had not had a death from West Nile virus since 2007, health officials said.

Statewide there have been 22 West Nile-related deaths this year, including six in Orange County and three in Los Angeles County, officials said.
