They say wisdom comes with age, but some subjects, such as romance, remain baffling even for those with decades of life experience. Such is the case for two British retirees played by Judi Dench and Bill Nighy in “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.”

In an exclusive clip from the India-set sequel, which opens Friday, Dench’s Evelyn and Nighy’s Douglas continue the heartfelt but hesitant courtship they began in the original “Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.”

Although Evelyn and Douglas were intrepid enough to travel halfway around the world to spend their twilight years in Jaipur -- where she has a new job as a fabric buyer and he’s begun giving sightseeing tours -- neither is quite bold enough to make the first move. (Watch the clip above.)

Those two aren’t the only ones trying to sort personal and professional challenges. Returning from the original film to do so are the eager young hotelier Sonny (Dev Patel), stern co-manager Muriel (Maggie Smith) and unlikely couple Norman and Carol (Ronald Pickup and Diana Hardcastle). Meanwhile, American charmer Guy (Richard Gere) and prospective client Lavinia (Tamsin Greig) are checking in for the first time.

The follow-up to the 2012 sleeper hit is once again directed by John Madden from a script by Ol Parker.
