Readers React: Unions shouldn’t be able to cripple the economy with impunity

To the editor: I am happy that the workers in the longshoremen’s union are making a great wage with excellent medical benefits, but I am troubled by the union’s power to cause such significant economic damage to so many other Americans. (“How longshoremen command $100K salaries in era of globalization and automation,” March 1)

Congress should pass legislation, or a class action suit should be brought, to hold the unions financially responsible for the damages they cause to others.

To the editor: I would prefer to see workers earning $100,000 or more annually — wages that can support our consumer-based economy — rather than workers earning “Wal-Mart greeter” pay.

Middle-class wages are eroding fast. We need more unions if we wish to safeguard the American dream.
