A gunman killed an employee at a Home Depot store in Manhattan on Sunday, then took his own life, a New York Police Department spokesman said.

The shooting occurred at the Home Depot on West 23rd Street in the Chelsea neighborhood about 2:45 p.m. Eastern time, said the spokesman, Sgt. Lee Jones.

Jones said the 31-year-old gunman was found dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The 38-year-old victim, who was the target of the attack, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, where he died from his injuries, Jones said.

The gunman was at one time an employee of the home improvement store, said Jones, who added that the names of the dead would be released later.

No one else was shot, he said.

Phone calls and emails to Home Depot were not immediately returned.

Ryan Cox, 31, of New York City told the Los Angeles Times that he was near the store, looking at Twitter on his phone, when he saw a tweet about the shooting. “I walked around the corner, and there was a little bit of chaos,” Cox said, as police rushed past him and crowds milled in confusion.

Cox said that he saw an EMT performing CPR on a victim on a stretcher, and that the person was then loaded into an ambulance and taken away. He said he also saw emergency officials taking another stretcher into the building.
