KEY MOMENT: Nick Castellanos hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to put Detroit up, 4-3, part of a three-run sixth inning for the Tigers. Angels right-hander Garrett Richards gave up four consecutive hits to start the inning — two singles and two doubles. The rally erased a three-run fifth inning for the Angels and gave the Tigers a lead they wouldn’t give up.

AT THE PLATE: This was just the second time in seven games since the All-Star break that the Angels have scored more than three runs in a game. All three runs batted in came from C.J Cron and Kole Calhoun. Mike Trout was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts against Max Scherzer, and he has now struck out five of the six times he has faced Scherzer this season. After Scherzer exited, Trout doubled.

ON THE MOUND: Richards faced a Cy Young award candidate last week in Seattle’s Felix Hernandez and battled him to a no-decision. On Thursday, he dueled reigning Cy Young award winner Scherzer, and was credited for the loss, his first since May 30. In his previous nine starts, Richards had given up more than three runs just once. He gave up four earned runs and seven hits Thursday.

INJURY UPDATE: Left-hander C.J. Wilson threw about 60 pitches in a four-inning bullpen session Thursday. Wilson probably will throw another bullpen session Friday or Saturday before the team evaluates his rehabilitation schedule. Wilson has been on the disabled list since July 10 because of a sprained right ankle. Utility infielder Grant Green was placed on the disabled list because of a lumbar strain Wednesday, but Angels Manager Mike Scioscia didn’t reveal results of Green’s MRI exam.

UP NEXT: Left-hander Tyler Skaggs (5-5, 4.65 earned-run average) will face Tigers left-hander Drew Smyly (6-8, 3.80) on Friday at Angel Stadium at 7 p.m. On the air: TV: FS West. Radio: 830.
