LeGarrette Blount on Seahawks’ defense: ‘They’re not immortal’

The Seattle Seahawks held opponents to the fewest average yards per game in the NFL during the regular season, but that doesn’t seem to bother New England Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount.

Asked about the challenge of facing a defense that was the league’s best at stopping the pass and No. 3 at thwarting the run, Blount gave the Seahawks some praise before putting things back into perspective.

“I don’t care about them being the top defense. That doesn’t bother me,” Blount said Tuesday, according to the Providence Journal. “They were good enough to get here, just like we were good enough to get here. They’re not immortal. They can be beaten.”

“Obviously they’re a pretty good defense,” he said. “They were good enough to get here, they were good enough to get here last year, so we are going to put a plan together to hopefully make sure we come out victorious.”

The Seahawks’ defense has, indeed, looked a little more civilian in the postseason. It has given up an average of 334 yards per game compared with 267 during the regular season, but that’s also come against much stronger competition.

The Patriots’ one-two punch of Tom Brady and Blount is likely to be a big challenge for a Seahawks defensive unit that has been up to the task, so far. Brady passed for 4,109 yards and 33 touchdowns, and Blount is coming off a 148-yard, three-touchdown performance against the Indianapolis Colts.

The Seahawks’ defense versus the Patriots’ offense should make for an intriguing matchup in Super Bowl XLIX on Sunday.
