A former assistant boys baseball coach at John Burroughs High School in Burbank was sentenced to two years in state prison Thursday for having an ongoing sexual relationship with a student for more than two years, starting when the girl was 15 years old, officials said.

Jose Banuelos Jr., 28, pleaded no contest to one felony count of unlawful sexual intercourse, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

In exchange for his plea, the remaining charges were dismissed. They included another count of unlawful sexual intercourse, one felony count each of oral copulation of a person under 16, oral copulation of a person under 18, sexual penetration by a foreign object and possession of child pornography, and a misdemeanor count of possessing a concealed firearm.

The relationship started in June 2013, almost a year-and-a-half after Banuelos was hired as a baseball coach, and continued until February of this year.

In March, the student’s family called police, after which the victim told officers of her ongoing “consensual” relationship, police said at the time.

At the time of his arrest, Banuelos also worked part-time for the city’s parks and recreation department in a role that would require him to report to city league sports games to make sure they ran smoothly.
