Football: Orange Lutheran gets to face No. 1 Corona Centennial

Share

No. 1-ranked Corona Centennial had no problem knocking off No. 5 Gardena Serra, 52-13, on Saturday night in Oceanside. Now the Huskies get to travel to Orange County on Friday night to face No. 14 Orange Lutheran (2-0). The game will be played at Orange Coast College.

“They’ve got some big dudes,” Centennial Coach Matt Logan said.

The Lancers are coming off a 43-28 win over Crespi. Last season, they gave Centennial plenty of problems before losing, 52-49.

The big difference this season, though, is that Centennial’s defense is much improved. The secondary is outstanding, and Centennial has worked on strategies to deal with bigger teams.

“Playing in a new division and being undersized and trying to come up with ways to combat that, we spent a lot of time in the offseason doing that,” Logan said. “We came up with ways to get better.”

Lutheran has plenty of players to challenge the Huskies, including an impressive junior defensive back-receiver in Brandon McKinney.

Among the other big games, Loyola (2-0) is at San Diego St. Augustine (2-0), Mission Viejo (2-0) is at LaHabra (2-0), Upland (2-0) is at Tesoro (1-1), Dorsey (2-0) plays Santa Margarita (2-0) at Trabuco Hills, Sierra Canyon (2-0) is at Taft (2-0) and Servite (1-1) is on the road at Concord De La Salle (1-1).

Also, if you want to get on a plane, St. John Bosco (2-0) is traveling to Portland, Ore., to face Central Catholic (0-1).
