Foster Farms recalls nearly 40,000 pounds of frozen chicken

Foster Farms is recalling nearly 40,000 pounds of frozen, pre-cooked chicken produced in its Louisiana plant because of potential listeria contamination, federal inspectors said.

The recall is for Chicken Breast Grilled Strips sold in 3.5-pound resealable bags. The chicken was produced on Aug. 5 and shipped to retailers in California, Texas, Utah and Washington state, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said Thursday.

The affected product bears the processing plant number P-33901 and a “best by date” of Aug. 5, 2015.

“The problem was discovered during the company’s routine in-plant inspection,” federal authorities said in a prepared statement. “While some of the product was set aside and held, the product subject to this recall was inadvertently shipped. FSIS and the company have received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of these products.”

The recall comes two months after a salmonella outbreak linked to the Central California company was declared over.

Listeria primarily affects the elderly, pregnant women, newborns and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and gastrointestinal problems.
