As ‘Straight Outta Compton’ box office streak continues, a look at other summer blockbusters

It’s looking to be a trifecta for “Straight Outta Compton.” The biopic about the seminal South L.A. hip-hop group N.W.A is expected to be No. 1 at the box office this weekend for the third straight week. So far the well-reviewed film has earned almost $120 million at the box office.

If that happens, “Straight Outta Compton” would be only the second movie this summer to top the box office chart for three weeks. The other is another Universal Pictures release, “Jurassic World.”

The fourth installment of the “Jurassic Park” franchise, “Jurassic World” also was on top for the three weekends following its release on June 12. The nostalgia-infused dinosaur film starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard made its mark on the box office, earning $208.8 million during its opening weekend.

“Jurassic World’s” current domestic gross is at $639.9 million, with its worldwide box office total surpassing the $1.6-billion mark.

Another franchise film, “Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation,” was the film knocked out of the top box office spot by “Straight Outta Compton’s” release. The fifth “Mission: Impossible” film was No. 1 at the box office for two straight weeks, earning $55.5 million on its first weekend.

“Rogue Nation’s” current domestic box office total is $161.1 million. Combined with its international earnings, Tom Cruise’s action spy movie has raked in $442.4 million worldwide.

Marvel had two superhero offerings this summer, and both films ruled the box office for two weekends each.

The first to hit theaters was “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” released May 1, that brought in $191.3 million in its opening weekend. Set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the film reunited the superhero team assembled in 2012’s “The Avengers” (consisting of multiple characters that have headlined their own stand-alone films). The movie has so far earned $457.5 million at the domestic box office and $1.4 billion worldwide.

Marvel’s other offering was “Ant-Man,” a superhero origin story couched in a heist film starring Paul Rudd as the titular hero. The ant-sized hero took a $57.2 million chunk out of the box office in its opening weekend. “Ant-Man” has so far earned $165.8 million at the domestic box office and $362.3 million worldwide.

Outside of summer movies, the only 2015 films so far to lead at the box office for two or more weeks are “American Sniper” (for three weeks), “Fifty Shades of Grey” (for two weeks) and “Furious 7” (for four weeks).

Can “Straight Outta Compton” continue its winning streak? The odds are in its favor. There are no major releases for the historically slow Labor Day weekend.
