Marion “Suge” Knight is suing Chris Brown and the owners of a West Hollywood nightclub over a shooting in which the rap producer was hit multiple times during a party hosted by the singer in 2014.

The 51-year-old former mogul, who’s in jail awaiting trial on murder and attempted murder charges, is alleging the singer and the owners of 1Oak L.A. had inadequate security at an MTV Video Music Awards pre-party in Brown’s honor and allowed at least one armed person inside, according to the Associated Press.

One interesting point in the lawsuit: It reportedly alleges that fear for his life in the wake of the club shooting is what spurred Knight to speed away when he was accosted in his car in 2015, leaving one man dead and two others injured in a Compton restaurant parking lot.

Knight, a twice-guilty felon, is in jail awaiting trial on murder and attempted murder charges in that incident. If convicted in a trial that’s set to start Aug. 1, he would face a three-strikes sentence of 25 years to life.

The lawsuit, filed in L.A. County Superior Court, alleges that 1Oak should have taken special precautions with security because events hosted by Brown have a history of violence, the AP reported. It accuses Brown of having gang ties and a “well-documented track record of hosting events and/or parties in which violence frequently erupted,” the AP said.

Knight also reportedly says in the suit that the health problems that have plagued him in the lead-up to his criminal trial, including a blood clot, stem from his 2014 injuries. He survived wounds to his abdomen, chest and left forearm.

Attorneys for Brown and Knight were not available Monday for comment.
