Chrissy Teigen packed up her gun-control opinions and split after getting hit with a barrage of negativity over a comment she tweeted Wednesday regarding the deadly shooting in Ottawa, Canada.

“active shooting in Canada, or as we call it in america, wednesday,” the supermodel opined while the crisis was still unfolding. “That’s not a joke. It is a fact.”

Teigen, the 28-year-old wife of musician John Legend, soon found herself back on her heels, criticized either by people who didn’t understand her and thought she was trashing Canada or making light of the situation, or by people who did understand her and simply weren’t thrilled by what she said.

Though she tweeted that “90% of my mentions” were along the lines of just shut up and look pretty, some went beyond “not thrilled” and slammed the Victoria’s Secret and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model with vulgar personal attacks and threats.

“Sorry you don’t understand that is a knock at america and our issues with gun control. No one is minimizing the Ottawa shooting,” Teigen said in a series of tweets. “I’m not apologizing. If you take it wrong, that is your fault. For some reason, Canadians think I am saying they have a lot of shootings. I am not saying that. Sigh.”

About two hours after she first weighed in on the shooting, she noted that it had “been a while since I inadvertently pissed a ton of people off. Forgot how much it sucks.”

She peeked at her mentions Thursday morning, only to find a “sea of hate and anger.” A few tweets later, she gave up.

“I feel sick. Bye Twitter,” Teigen wrote. “Taking my talents to instagram.”

Which explains why there was such spirited discussion in comments on her Thursday picture of chicken cutlets.
