The referee was the only one who didn’t see San Bradford get hit in the facemask Thursday night [Video]

Sam Bradford said he was told by referee Tony Corrente that he was hit on the shoulder during the failed two-point conversion attempt in the final minute that left the Minnesota Vikings on the losing end of a 17-15 score against the Dallas Cowboys.

Here’s how the play looked to everyone watching on “Thursday Night Football”:

It’s pretty clear that Dallas defensive tackle Cedric Thornton got Bradford in the facemask on the play. But that’s not what Corrente saw.

“He told me that I did not get hit in the facemask,” Bradford said after the game. He then paused, shrugged and said, “So ...” before trailing off.

But Vikings defensive end Brian Robison had plenty more to say about the situation.

“I’m sick and tired of the reffing in this league right now. I’m sick and tired of it,” he said. “I mean, you got holding calls all over the place that people don’t want to call, Bradford gets hit in the face at the end of the game and you don’t call it.

“I’m not laying this loss on reffing, but at some point it’s got to get better.”

That last sentence contains two key points. The Vikings shouldn’t blame the loss on the officiating. Missed calls go both ways. On that very same conversion attempt, for example, Minnesota left tackle T.J. Clemmings looked like he got away with a false start.

Even after that play, the Vikings still had a chance. But with 25 seconds remaining, they failed to gain possession on an onside kick attempt and then the Cowboys were able to run out the clock.

But Robison also was right in that the officiating does need to get better at some point. This missed call has once again sparked pleas that penalties, at least in key situations like this, ought to be reviewable. It’s not Corrente’s fault he didn’t see the foul from where he was on the field, but the league should be able to correct such errors if possible.

And since we were all able to see what really happened
