Jose Fernandez-signed baseballs found in bag on Miami Beach near site of fatal boat crash

A bag of baseballs autographed by Jose Fernandez was found on Miami Beach near the site of the boating accident that took the life of the star Marlins pitcher and two of his friends early Sunday.

According to WSVN-TV in Miami, a bag containing four signed baseballs and Fernandez’s checkbook apparently washed ashore and was found by a beachgoer 20 blocks north of the location where Fernandez’s boat crashed into a rock jetty at around 3:15 a.m.

The items were turned in to a lifeguard, Ocean Rescue Division Chief Vincent Canosa told WSVN. Canosa also said they appear to have come from the 32-foot SeaVee that was registered to Fernandez.

It has yet to be determined whether the bag and the balls belonged to Fernandez or his friends, Emilio Macias and Eduardo Rivero, both of whom also were killed in the accident.

Fernandez was on everyone’s mind Monday night when the Marlins hosted the New York Mets in a game the 24-year-old All Star had been slated to start. Every Miami player wore jerseys with Fernandez’s name and No. 16 on the back, and his number was also stenciled on the back of the mound.
