Donald Trump is often considered to be one of the main causes behind the downfall of the USFL.

Despite that, one of the biggest stars from the long-defunct football league says Trump has his support as a presidential candidate.

“There’s not a doubt in my mind right now he is my front-runner,” Walker told USA Today. “I’m not going to say anything negative about him because it’s not true.”

Before going on to NFL stardom, Walker spent the first three years of his professional career with the USFL’s New Jersey Generals. Trump owned the team for two of those seasons, during which time he pushed the league to move to a fall schedule and take on the NFL in an antitrust lawsuit.

The USFL won the case but was awarded a mere $3 and folded before the 1986 season.

But Walker apparently doesn’t hold any of that against Trump. He said the former team owner “wanted to win and he was prepared to go out and do whatever it took to win. He was a guy that always did what he said he was going to do.”

Admitting he developed a personal friendship with Trump and his family, Walker said he also agrees with some of the billionaire’s political ideas, including the construction of a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, but not the most controversial one of deporting the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S.

Also, Walker said, we need someone in office who is not a career politician. “I think we had to get a president now that’s more of a business person.”

He added: “When are we going to get back to what’s best for this country? I think that’s what Donald is pushing to do.”
