On night he’s honored, Brett Favre calls Aaron Rodgers ‘almost too good’

Brett Favre threw some kind words at the man who replaced him at quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.

Speaking at a charity function Thursday, Favre said that Aaron Rodgers is “almost too good.”

“I mean that with all due respect,” Favre said. “I mean, all of my good records will be broken and all my bad ones I’m going to keep. When I watch him, he’s good. … I don’t know what else to say.”

Favre lauded Rodgers at an event for the Rawhide Boys Ranch, an organization that helps at-risk boys in Wisconsin. The retired quarterback has long supported the charity co-founded by another former Packers quarterback, Hall of Famer Bart Starr.

Favre later had his name and retired No. 4 unveiled on the facade at Lambeau Stadium at halftime of the Bears-Packers game Thursday night.

The ceremony is the culmination of a season-long reconciliation between Favre and the organization following a messy split with Favre indecisive about retirement.

Rodgers replaced Favre as the starter in 2008.

“You kind of know what you get with Aaron Rodgers,” Favre said at a point during his talk in which he spoke about the latter stages of his career.

“I never was as good as him. I can throw it. I can throw it with anybody. But, man, everything looks so good when he’s at his best.”

With cold, driving rain drenching Lambeau Field, Favre thanked his former teammates and fans as the crowd roared its approval. His family was on hand as well.

“They get to see what it’s like playing at Lambeau when it’s cold, windy and raining. There’s nothing like it. I thank them so much for being so supportive all these years,” Favre said. “And most importantly, I thank you.”

There was one more special welcome for Favre when Hall of Famer Bart Starr was driven to the middle of the field on a cart. The 81-year-old Starr is recovering from two strokes and a heart attack.

Washington Redskins cornerback Chris Culliver has injured his right knee in practice and will undergo an MRI. Culliver left the locker room on crutches and with a full brace on his right leg Thursday. Coach Jay Gruden says Culliver “tweaked” his knee after jumping for a ball and landing on it. ... The Arizona Cardinals have placed outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley on season-ending injured reserve with a torn pectoral muscle and signed defensive tackle Red Bryant. Woodley appeared in all 10 games, mostly as a starter, before being injured Sunday night against Cincinnati. The nine-year NFL veteran had 14 tackles, four solo, and one sack. ... The New Orleans Saints have placed cornerback Keenan Lewis on injured reserve, ending his season. In a corresponding move, the Saints signed cornerback Chris Owens, whose last regular-season action came last season with Kansas City.
