Dak Prescott is the Dallas Cowboys’ starting quarterback for at least another week.

“Dak has got a hot hand, and we’re going to go with it,” owner/general manager Jerry Jones said of the rookie quarterback Sunday after the Cowboys’ eighth straight win, 35-30 over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

That means veteran quarterback Tony Romo will serve as a backup for only the second time since he won the Cowboys’ starting job in 2006. Romo has been inactive all season after suffering a back injury during the preseason, but has been practicing in recent weeks and is expected to be active next week.

At 8-1, the Cowboys have the best record in the NFL, and Prescott is a huge part of that. Against Pittsburgh, he completed 22 of 32 passes for 319 yards and two touchdowns and also led his team on a game-winning scoring drive with just 42 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

“I think the longer [Prescott] plays like this, the more we have a chance to have another win,” Jones said. “Everybody here wants to do only really one thing, is win. There’s nobody that would introduce any other issue or any other consideration other than do whatever it takes to win the game. So, today, to be able to come out of here with a win just obliterates any thought about any of the issues that you might have as to who’s out on the field.”

Jones stopped short of giving the starting job to Prescott permanently. So does that mean Prescott gets demoted if he has a bad game or if the Cowboys lose?

That’s unclear. And it’s a decision the team doesn’t have to worry about as long as it keeps playing well.

“It’s just going with the obvious. You are going with how the team is doing right now,” Jones said. “It must not be obvious because I get asked about it every time I open my mouth. It’s not hard. It’s not hard at all. Tony would make the same decision. That’s what you do.”
