Florida State dropped a mini-bombshell Friday night when the school announced it was increasing the suspension of quarterback Jameis Winston from the first half to the full game against Clemson on Saturday.

The joint statement, from Interim President Garnett S. Stokes and Athletic Director Stan Wilcox, said the decision was “based upon the results of our continuing investigation of Tuesday’s incident involving Jameis Winston.”

On Tuesday, Winston stood on a tabletop on campus and shouted a vulgarity involving women. He was apparently mimicking a popular Internet meme.

Stokes and Wilcox on Wednesday suspended Winston for the first half of the top-ranked Seminoles’ key Atlantic Coast Conference game against No. 22 Clemson in Tallahassee on Saturday.

Winston apologized Thursday, saying, “It was a selfish act and that’s not how you do things around here.”

He added, “I did something, so I got to accept the consequences.”

It was the latest in a series of off-field incidents involving Winston, a third-year sophomore who led Florida State to last season’s national title and also won the Heisman Trophy.

Last year, Winston was named in a sexual assault case involving a former Florida State student. Florida’s state attorney announced in December, however, that there was not enough evidence to press charges.

Last spring, Winston was caught shoplifting crab legs from a local supermarket in Tallahassee. He was suspended three games from the Seminoles’ baseball team, for which he serves as the team’s closer, and did community service.

Sean Maguire, a third-year sophomore, will start in Winston’s place for the Seminoles against the Tigers.
