Lindsey Vonn crashes out of World Cup super-G

American Lindsey Vonn’s bid for a record-equaling 62nd World Cup win will have to wait a little while longer.

The four-time World Cup winner crashed out of Sunday’s super-G race after entering a gate slightly too wide, as Elisabeth Goergl beat Olympic champion Anna Fenninger by .05 seconds to lead an Austrian 1-2.

Although Vonn did no damage to her troublesome right knee — after only starting to race again recently following two operations — she landed heavily on her right elbow.

“I was risking everything and attacking the course. That sometimes happens in super-G, you don’t have any training runs and you have just one inspection,” Vonn said. “I hit my elbow, somehow funny. I have some ice on it. It’s just a little bit swollen but no big deal.”

After winning Saturday’s downhill, Vonn was looking for a fourth consecutive podium finish and was .01 ahead of Georgl’s time on the first split.

“I didn’t feel quite as sharp as I normally do,” Vonn said. “I was a little bit tired, yesterday was a very long day.”

She was looking to move level with Austrian great Annemarie Moser-Proll for all-time wins.

Perhaps fittingly, Vonn can now do so at the Austrian resort of Bad Kleinkirchheim, where there is a downhill and a super-G set for Jan. 10-11.

Three-time defending overall World Cup winner Marcel Hirscher held a slight lead over two Frenchmen following the opening run of a giant slalom on the Gran Risa course in Alta Badia, Italy.

The Austrian clocked 1 minute, 16.71 seconds down a piste made up nearly entirely of artificial snow. Alexis Pinturault stood second, 0.16 seconds behind, and Thomas Fanara was another hundredth back in third.

Olympic champion Ted Ligety, a two-time winner on the Gran Risa, stood seventh, 1.33 behind, and overall leader Kjetil Jansrud was 20th, trailing by 3.12. Hirscher won this race last season and also took a slalom here in 2011. Trailing Jansrud by 152 points in the overall, Hirscher is seeking his third consecutive win in technical events after sweeping a giant slalom and slalom in Sweden last weekend.

Roman Koudelka edged four-time Olympic champion Simon Ammann for victory in a World Cup event on the Swiss veteran’s home hill in Engelberg, Switzerland.

Koudelka of the Czech Republic leaped 135.5 and 138.5 meters to score 289.6 points, 5.2 ahead of 33-year-old Ammann who jumped 134 and 136.5 meters.

Third-placed Michael Hayboeck of Austria was a further two points back.

The International Ski Federation has canceled women’s World Cup races in Semmering, Austria, next week because of a lack of snow.

Mild temperatures have prevented organizers from producing sufficient artificial snow to cover the Zauberberg course at the resort, where a giant slalom was scheduled for Sunday, followed by a night slalom the next day.

FIS women’s race director for technical events, Markus Mayr, says “it’s been impossible to create a suitable course due to the weather conditions.”
