Abby Wambach on shortlist for World Player of the Year

U.S. national team standout Abby Wambach was selected Friday as one of 10 finalists for FIFA’s World Player of the Year award, an honor she won in 2012.

Also named to the list were five-time winner Marta of Brazil and Nadine Angerer of Germany, who won last year.

On the shortlist for the women’s coach of the year award is former U.S. national team coach Pia Sundhage, now with Sweden, and England’s Laura Harvey, who coaches the Seattle Reign of the National Women’s Professional League.

Sundhage has finished in the top three four times.

The shortlists for the men’s awards will be released next week with the winners to be announced Jan. 12.

Wambach, who will lead the U.S. into Friday’s semifinal of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying tournament with Mexico, has 10 goals in 14 games this year, giving her 173 international goals for her career, more than any player -- male or female -- in history.

With a win over Mexico, the U.S. would clinch an automatic berth into next summer’s world championships in Canada.
