The Houston Astros fired Manager Bo Porter on Monday in his second season with the club.

General Manager Jeff Luhnow says the decision wasn’t based on Houston’s record but because “we need a new direction in our clubhouse.”

The Astros are in fourth place in the American League West with a 59-79 record, second worst in the league.

Bench coach Dave Trembley also was fired.

Tom Lawless will take over as interim manager. Lawless worked in Houston’s minor league system and was the interim manager at triple-A Oklahoma City this season when Manager Tony DeFrancesco was on medical leave.

Adam Everett, who was working for the Astros in the minors, will replace Trembley.

Porter joined the Astros for the 2013 season after working as a third base coach for the Washington Nationals.

Red Sox’s Dustin Pedroia could sit out Yankees series

Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia was out of the lineup for the second consecutive game because of concussion-like symptoms.

Manager John Farrell said that Pedroia is feeling a little better but still experiencing symptoms. Farrell is not optimistic about Pedroia playing in a three-game series with the New York Yankees that begins Tuesday night.

Pedroia left Boston’s 7-0 loss Saturday to the Tampa Bay Rays in the second inning. He was elbowed in the head by Logan Forsythe, who was sliding head-first into second base.
