Angels about to broaden search for new general manager
The Angels have completed initial interviews with internal candidates for their vacant general manager’s position, and they intend to look next at candidates from outside the organization.
The team has interviewed assistant general managers Matt Klentak and Scott Servais. Jerry Dipoto, who resigned as general manager July 1, hired Klentak and Servais.
As the Angels consider candidates from outside the organization, they plan to work first with the list they assembled when they hired Dipoto in 2011. The runners-up to Dipoto then included New York Yankees assistant general manager Billy Eppler, Texas Rangers assistant general manager Thad Levine, and Yankees scouting director Damon Oppenheimer.
Although Bud Black has been the most prominent name in rumors, the former Angels pitching coach and San Diego Padres manager does not appear to be a good fit at the moment. The Angels are exploring other possibilities first, and Black might prefer to see what managerial opportunities arise before committing to another position.
