Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to undergo knee surgery, reports say
Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers had a tough time Sunday in Miami, and the news didn’t get any better after their 30-15 loss to the Dolphins.
Roethlisberger has a torn meniscus in his left knee and will undergo surgery Monday, according to multiple media reports.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which was the first to report the news, said there is no timetable for the star quarterback’s return but also indicated that he could be ready play Nov. 6 against the Baltimore Ravens, following next week’s game against the New England Patriots and a bye week.
Roethlisberger injured his knee while trying to avoid a sack midway through the second quarter. He ended up throwing an interception to Miami’s Reshad Jones on the play.
“I don’t know how it happened,” a limping Roethlisberger said after the game. “I just felt something funny in my knee.”
The two-time Super Bowl champion went into the locker room and missed the rest of the quarter, but was able to play the entire second half. He finished with 19 of 34 for 189 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.
Backup quarterback Landry Jones is expected to start for Pittsburgh against New England — but Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said Monday morning he’s not ruling out Roethlisberger just yet.
“He’s one of the toughest guys in the league.” Brady said of Roethlisberger. “I would never rule him out for anything. ... He’s done that before and played and thrown for 400 yards.”
Last season, Roethlisberger was expected to miss a week or two after spraining his foot in a game against Oakland. But when Jones was injured in the first quarter against Cleveland the following week, Roethlisberger came in and threw for 379 yards and three touchdowns.
“He’s just a stud, just an incredible player,” Brady said. “I’ve played against him since 2004, and nothing surprises me with him. He’s one of the best quarterbacks I’ve ever played against. I would never count him out.”
