Are the Chargers considering replacing Norv Turner with Super Bowl-winning coach Bill Cowher?

According to the New York Post’s Mark Cannizzaro, Cowher already has had an interview with the Chargers, ‘who were gauging his interest,’ and the Steelers coach-turned-TV analyst did indeed express interest in coaching in San Diego.

[Updated, 8:28 a.m., Dec. 24: A Chargers spokesman on Saturday dismissed the report as false.]

The Chargers are 7-7 and in danger of missing the playoffs for a second consecutive season.

It isn’t just Turner’s job that’s in jeopardy, but that of General Manager A.J. Smith.

Cowher has been linked to other jobs too, among them is possibly replacing Tom Coughlin as coach of the Giants.

In October, Cowher released a statement saying he had not been contacted by any teams and did not plan to return to coaching next season.

‘I’m here to say to you today, I do not plan on coaching next year,’ he said two months ago. ‘I love where I work, and more importantly I enjoy the people I work with [at CBS]. So I can put all this speculation to rest, and if I have to repeat this in December, I will.

‘It’s a tough profession, and I know the speculation is out there. I’m flattered by it, but at the same time it affects too many people’s lives. I like what I’m doing right here and I plan on being back in the same seat next year.’

The Chargers need to win their final two games -- at Detroit on Saturday and at Oakland next week -- to keep their flickering postseason hopes alive.
