Hours after an embarrassing 38-35 home loss to Duke, Notre Dame Coach Brian Kelly fired defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder following a 1-3 start.

The school tweeted a new release saying VanGorder is being replaced by defensive analyst Greg Hudson. Hudson previously served as defensive coordinator at Purdue, East Carolina and Minnesota, as well as assistant head coach and linebackers coach at Florida State.

The Irish’s defense is giving up 33.5 points a game through four games, which is on pace to be the most points in school history. The school record for points surrendered per game was 28.9, set in 1956 when the Irish finished 2-8.

Duke, which managed a combined 27 points in losses to Wake Forest and Northwestern, scored 28 points in the first half Saturday against the Irish.

Students chanted for VanGorder to be fired during the game.

Ron Turner has been fired as coach at Florida International, one day after the team fell to 0-4 this season with a 53-14 loss to Central Florida.

FIU has won only 13 of its last 53 games, going back to the final game of the 2011 season. The Panthers were 10-30 in parts of four seasons under Turner, who replaced Mario Cristobal before the 2012 season.

Defensive coordinator Ron Cooper is taking over as interim coach. The Panthers play host to rival Florida Atlantic on Saturday.

Wisconsin moved up to No. 8 in the Associated Press college football poll and Louisiana State became the second preseason top-10 team to drop out of the rankings in the first month of the season.

There were few changes in the top 25 as the only four ranked teams that lost did so to other ranked teams.
