Earthquake: 3.4 quake strikes near Berkeley

A shallow magnitude 3.4 earthquake was reported Wednesday in Claremont, Calif., near Berkeley, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 4:42 a.m. Pacific at a depth of 6.8 miles.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was two miles from Berkeley, three miles from Emeryville and 64 miles from Sacramento.

The quake was initially reported at magnitude 3.7 and later downgraded to 3.4.

In the last 10 days, there have been no earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby.
