Daniel Nava goes three for three in Angels’ 9-7 exhibition win over Mariners

Highlights from the Angels’ 9-7 victory over the Seattle Mariners:

AT THE PLATE: Switch-hitting left fielder Daniel Nava doubled in two runs in the fourth inning after singling earlier in the game, both times batting right-handed. Those were the Angels’ only runs until the sixth, when Nava singled in one more run batting left-handed and secured a three-for-three day. “Nava’s looked good,” Manager Mike Scioscia said. “He’s come out here and looked good from both sides of the plate.” …In the seventh, minor leaguers Nick Buss and Sherman Johnson each doubled in a pair of runs, and the Angels tacked on a run apiece in the eighth and ninth frames. … Shortstop Andrelton Simmons, making his first start in the field, went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.

ON THE MOUND: Left-handed pitching prospect Nate Smith started for the Angels and struggled, yielding three runs in two innings, including a home run to Robinson Cano. …Setup man Joe Smith pitched an inning of scoreless relief. … Right-hander Cam Bedrosian gave up a run for his second consecutive appearance. This time, it was on a solo homer by Franklin Gutierrez. …Prospects Greg Mahle and Victor Alcantara also gave up runs.

EXTRA BASES: Left-hander Andrew Heaney, scheduled to start the game, was scratched in the morning because he felt sick. Scioscia said Heaney would miss this turn and reenter the rotation on March 10. …Right fielder Rafael Ortega recorded an assist for the second consecutive day, this time at home. … Saturday’s game was the first of many matchups this season between the Angels and new Mariners General Manager Jerry Dipoto and Manager Scott Servais. Both men worked for the Angels last year.
