Laurie Anderson, Todd Haynes to share honors at Hammer Museum’s Gala in the Garden

The Hammer Museum will honor multimedia artist Laurie Anderson and filmmaker Todd Haynes at its 14th annual Gala in the Garden scheduled for Oct. 8, the museum announced Thursday.

The event serves as one of the museum’s biggest fundraisers. Last year’s edition pulled in $2.5 million. Proceeds support museum exhibitions and public programming.

The celebration praises individuals who have made significant and visionary contributions to the arts. Previous honorees include Paul McCarthy, Diane Keaton, Mark Bradford, Joni Mitchell, Tony Kushner, Barbara Kruger, Matt Groening, Alice Waters, Miuccia Prada, Joan Didion, Ed Ruscha, Dave Eggers and Frank Gehry.

Anderson, the prolific writer, director, visual artist and vocalist, recently completed residencies at the Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA and the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center in Troy, N.Y. Her latest film, “Heart of a Dog,” won acclaim after playing at the 2015 Venice and Toronto film festivals. She lives in New York City.

Haynes is known for films including “Safe,” “Far From Heaven” and “Velvet Goldmine.” His most recent feature, “Carol,” stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara as forbidden lovers in 1950s New York. “Carol” received six Academy Award nominations and five Golden Globe Award nominations.

The Hammer event will be held in collaboration with Italian luxury goods house Bottega Veneta, whose creative director, Tomas Maier, will serve as co-chair. Chef Suzanne Goin of Lucques will create the menu.
