Westlake Village, CA - March 12: Mark Golay, director of engineering projects at OceanWell, lowers a water cleaning/desalination pod that is being tested at the Las Virgenes Reservoir in Westlake Village Wednesday, March 12, 2025. The company's plan, once the pod has been tested, is to deploy a "farm" of them on the ocean floor near Malibu. The water district that supplies Calabasas, Agoura Hills and other L.A. suburbs is working with a company to pioneer a new desalination technology, testing a system of filtration pods that will be anchored to the ocean floor at depths of more than 1,000 feet. Las Virgenes Municipal Water District, which now relies entirely on water from Northern California, says the desalination pods that the company OceanWell plans to deploy off the coast will help boost local supplies and reduce dependence on imported water, without causing the environmental harm that are a large desalination plant on the coast would. The company has started testing the system at Las Virgenes Reservoir. Water managers are hoping this type of desalination technology will help the area become less vulnerable to drought. (Allen J.
OCEANO, CA - JULY 03, 2019 - Riders of all ages enjoy the sand at The Oceano Dunes, a few miles south of Pismo Beach off Highway 1, as a major destination for off-roaders and campers. They arrive in trucks, trailers and RVs and other vehicles, motoring down a ramp onto the beach to access the "Sand Highway," to make camp July 3, 2019. Oceano Dunes State Park, one of the state's most popular parks draws about 2 million visitors a year. On busy weekends and holidays, reservations for its 1,000 sandy campsites fill up six months in advance. The California Coastal Commission is considering a move to scale back, and potentially eliminate, off-roading at the Oceano Dunes, the only state park on the California coast where you can still ride off-road vehicles. The decision stems from decades of controversy over off roading's impact on sensitive dune habitat, endangered birds and air quality for nearby residents. Crews from Cal Fire, San Bernardino County Fire Protection District, Victorville Fire Department, and Apple Valley Fire worked together to contain the vegetation fire at 18.6 acres with no reported structure damage. At the beginning and end of this video, you'll see a rare fire phenomena. Ash devils form when intense heat causes air to rise and spin, pulling ash, embers, and debris into a rotating column. Ash devils can create serious challenges on the fireline by spreading embers and igniting spot fires in multiple directions, causing unpredictable wind shifts, and reducing visibility for crews working nearby.
