Dozens are reported missing after three days of rain. Meteorologists say the downpour is unrelated to Hurricane Ida, now swirling off Mexico's Yucatan peninsula.

Torrential rains in El Salvador triggered flooding and mudslides that left at least 124 people dead across the Central American nation, officials said Sunday.

Consider heading to locales in Nayarit and Oaxaca, where surf, sun and inexpensive attractions have been a hit for one family of four.

With news of drug-related violence and H1N1 flu in the headlines, tourism to Mexico has plummeted. But the truth is the violence is largely regional and the swine flu is no longer confined to here. Many places in Mexico are inexpensive, kid-friendly and sunny. Here are some of my family's recent favorites.

A colorful past rich in Mexican history (Intrigue! Revolt!) is just part of the charm of this now-mellow colonial city.

There are plenty of reasons to visit Querétaro, but it's the instability and conflict and violence that finally won me over.

The Centro Histórico area is the nation's repository of rare and antique bookstores.

For decades, Enrique Fuentes, the owner of Librería Madero, an antique-book store in the Centro Histórico of Mexico City, has scavenged through piles of near-garbage every Tuesday morning in a junkyard market in search of printed matter. A 16th century book he dug up there in 1985 paid for the bookstore. "Finding a book like that was like winning the lottery," he said.

Keep in mind that the drug war is far from most resorts and other tourist areas and follow the U.S. State Department recommendations. And if possible, get immunized against the swine flu beforehand.

Mexico's drug war is entering its fourth year. Its H1N1 flu outbreak began with dozens of deaths and global headlines last spring. This leaves travelers with at least two reasons to study up before booking that Mexico trip.

Brazilian sugar producers say sugar-based fuel is more environmentally sound than electricity or corn ethanol as an alternative for powering cars. But the odds are long for a change.

Who could resent the attention being showered on electric cars? Stylish and clean, they're the darling of the renewable-energy crowd, which is hailing the scheduled rollout of several e-powered models next year as a major blow against global warming.

Deforestation left nothing to hinder ancient floodwaters on the desert plain, researchers find. Modern Peru could learn from the civilization's collapse, they say.

The Nazca people of Peru -- famous for their huge line drawings on an arid plateau that are fully visible only from the air -- set the stage for their demise by deforesting the plain, allowing a huge El Niño-fueled flood to ravage the Ica Valley about AD 500, researchers have found.
