WITH this year's Oscars still in jeopardy and the Golden Globes a televised disaster, Sunday's Screen Actors Guild Awards finally delivered the goods: top-notch stars, outrageous gowns and self-congratulatory speeches. But the nationally televised ceremony also played like a subdued labor rally, reminding TV viewers and producers alike that Hollywood's most powerful union is poised to take on the studios too.

After the stark, starless Golden Globes, the actors guild broadcast raises the bar using celeb power alone.

In a normal year, the Screen Actors Guild Awards are just one event in a seemingly endless succession of Hollywood-statuary handouts. Indeed, the commercials pretty much say it all. This year's TNT and TBS broadcasts of the awards Sunday night were broken up by plugs for SlimFast and the joys of alpaca breeding. It's not the Academy Awards, after all.

THE red carpet may have been a soggy mess, but the stars at the Screen Actors Guild Awards were anything but, upping the glamour quotient to Oscar night proportions. Floor sweeping trains, all-over beading and gob-stopper-sized drop earrings were everywhere as women ditched the show's traditionally casual look for fashion with a capital "F."

LEAVING the spotlight and applause behind them, the cast of "No Country for Old Men" ambled down the side stairs of the stage area, exchanging one-liners and cracking jokes, easing the tension of the moment. "I just found out that Tommy Lee Jones was in the movie," actor Josh Brolin offered. "This is the ensemble that never met."

Organizers had hoped to gain maximum media exposure for their protest.

A threat by a group of below-the-line Hollywood crew members to picket Sunday's Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles to protest the ongoing writers strike has been called off. In an e-mail sent to other crew members, set decorator Mel Cooper, who had called for the rally, said the picketing was canceled "due to the positive motion of the talks" now that negotiators for the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers are back at the bargaining table.
