With coupon sites such as Groupon and LivingSocial taking off, discounts are all the rage — unless you’re in the ticketing business. In that case, ‘discount’ is a dirty word.

But the $22-billion live-event business is hurting just like everyone else in the stagnant economy. To fill increasingly empty seats, a Hollywood-based company called ScoreBig is launching an online auction service this quarter to move tickets via a Priceline-like model that lets customers bid what they want pay.

Backed by Bain Capital, the 50-person startup is headed by a team of former ticketing executives from the NBA, the NFL, Ticketmaster and AEG Live. Although the site is still in beta and not open to the public, ScoreBig has already amassed an inventory averaging half a million tickets ranging from next week’s Interpol concert to next month’s Lakers game against the Dallas Mavericks.

For consumers who are interested in testing out the site, ScoreBig has a limited number of invitations here. Hurry, though; once the invites are exhausted, the link will no longer work.

In the meantime, you can read more about the company in The Times article here.
